This morning in the NDTV studio, Mukul Kesavan and I thought of a new acronym for Modi's brand of politics: DAD.
It stands for Death And Development.
Now I shall sit back and wait for the hate mail.

You Ask:
Remember reading a column by Barkha Dutt in HT - 2006 or thereabouts. She was discussing Vande Mataram; as expected, calling it a song with a "tortured history", etc. (Fair enough - but WHOSE religious inflexibility was the cause of that 'tortured" history?) Anyway, at the end of the column she lamented how Indian national icons were devoid of Islamic hues. My question is why, in India, must we divide ourselves into these backward religion-based conceptions of "communities" with each "community" having its "religion protected and flourishing"? Is your ideal this, Vir, or not - that we organize ourselves, as INDIVIDUALS, around the great principles of democracy, free-speech and secularism?
|
|
Vir answers: As individuals, not as communities or religions. One of India’s problems is that we think too much in terms of groups and not enough in terms of individuals.

You Ask:
Barkha Dutt criticizes Indian society for 'majoritarianism', in that we are supposedly intolerant of beards or burkas. She also our condemns 'homogenizing' Indian cultural practices, such as the ceremonial lighting of a lamp, etc.
Let's look at a religious map of the world. Everything but East Asia, remote parts of Africa and South America, and our India are either Islamic or Christian. These imperial religions have been pretty 'homogenizing' and, dare I say, 'majoritarian', eh? Why blame our poor old Hindu culture, when Islam, in our neighborhood, has been very effective in forcing converts to vehemently disown any Hindu past?
|
|
Vir answers: Yes but are we to be like Islam? Is it a good idea to Semitize Hinduism?

You Ask:
I am Marathi. I would like good, honest, hardworking and civil people living in my state, city and neighborhood. period. They should pay their taxes, follow rules, not litter/ spit, I dont care what language they speak, what religion they follow, which state they are from, nothing. For all the brouhaha there is about the non marathis in Mumbai who are making a mess out of that place – I ask aren’t the corrupt civic officials, the RTO officials, the local corporators, the police officials, guardian ministers, goonda parties – MNS/ SS all Marathis ? do you think these people gave a crap about the state city or the ordinary people? these venal creatures will sell a detailed map of mumbai to the likes of kasab if the price is right
